EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: A two year Associate Degree in Computer Drafting (Civil Engineering emphasis) with 2 years experience in computer drafting, computer systems, or computer operation in the field of Civil Engineering.

NATURE OF WORK: Inputs mapping data into computer system, installs and maintains computer records of department, prepares computer-generated maps and drawings.

WORK PERFORMED/AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

I. Performs tasks related to GIS mapping of the city.

A. Enters engineering and mapping data into the computer.
B. Prepares maps, plats, and drawings on the computer.
C. Operates all computers, plotters, and printers.
D. Keeps accurate records of all information entered into the computer.

II. Performs engineering tasks on the computer.

A. Prepares plans, layouts, drawings, and designs according to engineering
specifications on the computer.
B. Performs engineering calculations and writes reports.
C. Operates engineering software and assists others in department in using the
computer for design of engineering projects.
D. Drafts scale drawings for construction projects.
E. Modifies or edits existing drawings and transfers them to hardcopy, using
computer equipment.
F. Reviews new software/hardware to meet needs of the city staff and develops
appropriate modifications for the city use.

III. Collaborates with other departments in coordinating drafting requests.

A. Generates reports and drawings as requested by other departments.
B. Helps other departments choose software to fit their needs and develops
applications to fit their needs.

IV. Performs all other job-related activities as necessary.

A. Makes blueprints and duplicates prints of projects.
B. Plots profiles and cross sections.
C. Prepares reports of engineering studies as directed.

EXTENT AND TYPE OF INTERACTION WITH PUBLIC:

I. Develops public understanding of computer-related work and activities of the division.
A. Answers citizen questions and requests for materials and information.
B. Responds to citizen inquiries regarding maps, plats, and engineering projects.
C. Maintains good relations with public concerning the making and distribution of
information generated by the computer system.

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND REGISTRATIONS:

I. Must posses a valid Minnesota driver's license.

EQUIPMENT AND TOOL OPERATION:

I. Employee must be capable of operating miscellaneous tools and equipment relative to this position which shall include but may not be limited to: Motor vehicles, communication equipment, computers, copy machines, fax machines, measuring devices, and calculators.

WORKING HOURS AND CONDITIONS:

I. Hours may vary, but generally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
This is an exempt position and does not accrue overtime.

II. Office environment and construction job site activities, which may include walking, climbing, and bending, in a normal construction environment. This may include exposure to the natural elements, dust, insects, and conditions that could be hazardous or dangerous relative to construction sites.

In compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act the following represents the Physical and Environmental Demands: This position requires an equal amount of time spent standing, walking, and sitting. Lifting, pushing/pulling, or carrying objects weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds is sometimes required, with a maximum of forty (40) pounds infrequently required. Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, and bending are sometimes required. Repetitive movements of the hands are sometimes required. Audio, visual, and verbal functions are essential functions to performing this position. The majority of the workday is spent indoors.
