JOB TITLE: Mechanic

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Street Superintendent
DIRECTION OF OTHERS: None
EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: High School graduate. Two year course in diesel repair or related field preferred. Three years experience with a working knowledge of methods, tools, and materials used in the maintenance, repair, fabrication and welding of vehicles and equipment preferred. State certified welding certificate within one year of hire.
NATURE OF WORK: Performs mechanical maintenance on light and heavy equipment, automobiles, and special equipment.
WORK PERFORMED/AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
I. Performs preventative maintenance on City vehicles and equipment so that they are serviceable and in a good state of repair.
A. Inspects vehicles and equipment according to established schedules.
B. Completes routine servicing, lubrication, and oil changes.
C. Performs major and minor tune-ups.
D. Makes periodic adjustments on power, drive, brake, steering, electrical, cooling and related items.
II. Performs mechanical repair on vehicles and equipment to insure usefulness and longevity of such equipment.
A. Replaces or rebuilds tie rods, steering sectors, springs, shock absorbers, generators, alternators, electrical components and other items as required.
B. Repairs and adjusts hydraulic systems.
C. Does complete overhaul of engines.
III. Operates welding and machinist equipment.
A. Repair and/or fabricate parts so that equipment is operational when needed by fabricating, modifying and installing special equipment.
B. Ability to use acetylene, arc welding and wire welding equipment sufficient to repair damaged equipment and modify existing equipment per required specifications.
C. Performs metal forging, forming and tempering to repair equipment.
D. Fabricates and performs machine work so that repairs or modifications can be made when parts are not available.
IV. Operates street maintenance equipment as necessary and participates in street and sewer maintenance projects.
A. Hauls and spreads gravel and operates chip seal equipment.
B. Operates snow removal equipment.
C. Assists in various maintenance functions as required.
V. Maintains shop and equipment to insure ease of use and longevity.
A. Cleans or assists in cleaning of shop and shop equipment.
B. Maintains tools and shop area in a neat and orderly manner.
VI. Maintains inventory of supplies and materials.
A. Maintains inventory of frequently used oils, repair parts and service items.
B. Informs supervisor of needed supplies and parts.
C. Orders parts and material as directed.
VII. Performs all other job related activities as directed.
A. Informs supervisor of all operations on a regular basis.
EXTENT AND TYPE OF INTERACTION WITH PUBLIC:
I. Develops public understanding of work and activities of the Division.
II. Maintains good relations with suppliers and other City Departments in the course of repairing vehicles and equipment.
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND REGISTRATIONS:
I. Must possess a valid Minnesota Class A CDL driver’s license.
EQUIPMENT AND TOOL OPERATION:
I. Employee must be capable of operating miscellaneous tools and equipment relative to this position which shall include but may not be limited to: Motor vehicles, road construction equipment, road maintenance equipment, communication equipment, computers, copy machines, fax machines, measuring devices, welders, grinders, drills, presses, hoists, a variety of hand tools and calculators.
WORKING HOURS AND CONDITIONS:
I. Hours may vary, but generally 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. This is a non-exempt position.
II. Machine shop environment and construction job site activities, which may include walking, climbing, and bending, in a normal construction environment. This may include exposure to the natural elements, dust, insects, and conditions that could be hazardous or dangerous relative to construction sites.
III. As approved by the Director of Public Works and availability of funds, continuing education and training will be provided to ensure a competent level of ability to perform of this position and to allow maintenance of required licenses and certifications.

and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to seventy-five
