Hockey

Hockey Season Update from Tony Schwichtenberg, Program Supervisor: We are moving from the current 4-Level system to an age specific system.  The goal of the program will continue to be to develop basic skating and hockey skills to prepare your child for future participation in the Owatonna Youth Hockey Association or for future play on a recreational basis on the frozen ponds of Minnesota.  We will emphasize FUN, active practices, MORE FUN, earlier introduction of sticks & pucks, MORE FUN and age-appropriate skills development.

The new model will have 3 Levels: Learn to Skate, U6 and U8.

Learn to Skate: If your child is a first time skater and you registered him/her for Level 1, this is where he/she will start the season, regardless of age.  Once your child can skate safely, we will encourage him/her to move into his/her age specific level (U6 or U8).  Children with birth dates of 7/1/2011 or later will remain at the Learn to Skate level this year.

U6:  Children with birth dates between 7/1/2009 and 6/30/2011 will skate in the U6 group regardless of the level they skated in last year.  Children in this age group that start the season in Learn to Skate will be encouraged to move to the U6 group as soon as they can skate safely.

U8:  Children with birth dates between 7/1/2007 and 6/30/2009 will skate in the U8 group regardless of the level they skated in last year.  Children in this age group that start the season in Learn to Skate will be encouraged to move to the U8 group as soon as they can skate safely.

If your child’s birth date is before 7/1/2007, they will skate with the U8 group.  If you have a child at this older age that is just starting out and you registered them for “Level 1”, we welcome them to start out skating in the Learn to Skate group until they are comfortable on their skates and can skate safely.

As a result of this change, there are some slight adjustments to the schedule.  Please see the updated schedule (click here for updated schedule).

A helmet is required for everyone on the ice.  An entire bag of protective equipment is available for rent through the Owatonna Youth Hockey Association rental program for $50 per year.  Skates can be leased at Straight River Sports for an entire season for a reasonable cost. You can contact Tony Schwichtenberg, program supervisor for equipment rental at 507-461-7546 or Tony.Schwichtenberg@gmail.com.
